Run yourself happy

This article was in my Women's Running magazine this month.  I have always known that running helps mental health, both from personal experience and from reading different research papers.  This survey adds to this body of evidence.

A year-long England Athletics survey of over 13,000 people has revealed that 74% of runners have experienced an increase in their mental health and well being from running. An additional survey by England Athletics' RunTogether community showed that 89% of runners had increased hapiness as a direct result of running in a group, citing new friendships and added motivation. 'Physical exercise improves a person's well being by releasing endorphins, the body's 'feel good' hormones' says Dr Averil McClelland, a GP and elite masters athlete. 'Studies show that mild to moderate depression patients that exercise regularly do as well as those (on) antidepressant medications or talking therapies.'

On the 9th September 15 runners set out on the first parkrun in Spain.  It was actually a beach run.  Runners aged from 7 up to over 70 ran the 5k course on a lovely sunny day.  It was a great start as we encourage others to join us.

I started Parkrun Spain to encourage locals and ex pats alike to come together and run on Saturday morning. This page not only reports on park runs but also helps people find local runs so that they can enter other racaes.
